Sydni Ellis grew up in the great state of Texas, where she learned to love chips and salsa and hot weather. She has a master’s degree in Journalism from the University of North Texas, and she currently works in the College Communications, Marketing and Outreach office at Richland College. Some of her passions include writing, traveling and re-reading the Harry Potter Series every chance she gets. In the spirit of spontaneity, Sydni lives her life with a pen in one hand and her video camera in the other; ready to capture the next great story.
The bathrooms are clean, the floors are swept and the turkey is in the oven – so what else do you need to do? With Thanksgiving coming up this week (can you believe it?) and all the other winter holidays following closely behind, there’s not a lot of time left to get your home ready for guests. Luckily, we have a quick checklist to get you through last minute preparations, so you can go back to entertaining—and making sure Grandma Betty doesn’t have too much eggnog!
Light a Fire
Texas has had an unusually chilly fall, so make your guests feel warm and cozy by lighting a fire during your party. Before the big day, make sure to clean out your chimney, sweep up old ashes and get the logs ready to be lit. If you can’t remember the last time you’ve had a fire, hire a professional chimney sweep to come out and make sure you don’t accidentally burn the house down! However, when lighting a fire just isn’t an option, create a warm glow by lighting candles around the house. We love this Ambella candelabrum from Neiman Marcus, which is made with wrought-iron and sits on your hearth, adding a sophisticated touch to your home.
Get the Bar Ready
Nobody will notice you didn’t get to wipe down the baseboards if you are serving deliciously strong drinks at your party! Decide if you want to offer a signature cocktail, champagne or an open bar, and then set up your bar station with an ice bucket, clean glasses, garnishes, and of course, plenty of alcohol for everyone. Go the extra mile by investing in a beautiful new bar for your home, which can be used even after the party. Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams has a gorgeous Astor Bar, made with antique mirror and pewter that will complement any decor nicely. Inside are two shelves to hold wine and one shelf for other liquor bottles and bar accessories. Don’t think of it as an early Christmas gift for yourself—think of it as a necessary tool to host a fabulous event!
Deck the Halls
No end-of-year gathering is complete without some festive decorations. Wait until after Thanksgiving (or do it before, no judgements!), and put up the Christmas tree, string up lights and deck the halls of your home with holiday cheer! Need some inspiration? Z Gallerie has a glittering collection of gold, white and silver ornaments and decorations to transform your space into a winter wonderland. In particular, we love the sparkling white ornaments, the white LED pine branch that will light up your living room, and the glamorous ice crystal LED wreath to adorn your front door. These finishing touches will make your house stand out from the rest, and more importantly, make your guests feel right at home!
