Glamour, beauty and amazing designer clothes are being showcased at Galleria Dallas right now as part of Age of the Supermodel: The Photographs of Donna DeMari. You can catch the exhibit from now until October 28 on Level I, the south end at Galleria Dallas.
This multi-media exhibit includes 56 backstage photographs from the 1991/92 Haute Couture Season and rare video footage by DeMari, as well as related haute couture pieces courtesy of the University of Texas’s Texas Fashion Collection.
The photos and videos were taken by celebrated fashion photographer Donna DeMari in 1991, who was commissioned by British Vogue to photograph the Fall/Winter Haute Couture Season from backstage. During that time, very few people were granted access to backstage—the inner sanctum of models, designers and secrets behind haute couture were revealed to the world for the first time with her photos. DeMari used a Nikon F2, with just a few rolls of film per show, to document the unguarded moments of beautiful super models in the designs of Pierre Balmain, Chanel, Jean Louis Scherrer, Guy Laroche, Emanuel Ungaro, Christian LaCroix, Valentino, Givenchy and Lanvin.
“Galleria Dallas is proud to host this amazing collection of historic fashion images and the garments showcased by them,” stated Martha Hinojosa, director of marketing for Galleria Dallas in a recent press release. “We have a strong history of bringing fashion and its history to life in our space, and we are committed to creating interactive, educational and entertaining experiences such as this for the shoppers of North Texas.”
During the exhibit, you will see previously unpublished photographs of some of the most beautiful fashion models of the time. These include Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni, Naomi Campbell, Gisele Zelauy, Yasmeen Ghuri, Christy Turlington, Heather Stewart-Whyte, Susie Bick, Tatjana Patitz, Kristen McMenamy, Nadia Auerman, Claudia Mason, and Karen Mulder among others.
DeMari is an American photographer who began her career in Milan, Italy at 19-years-old. Her iconic images have appeared in numerous publications including Italian Vogue, British Vogue, Australian Vogue, L’Officiel and French Marie Claire. She was also the first woman to shoot the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition in 1995 and ’96, was featured in the ABC television special “The Making of the Swimsuit Edition,” and was the focus of a VH1 Fashion Television Special that explored her views as a female fashion photographer.
Visit the exhibit at 6:30 p.m. October 24 to hear Jan Strimple, fashion modeling legend, present “Running in Heels.” This talk will be a unique behind-the-scenes glimpse into the world of haute couture. RSVP by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org, as space is limited.
