Helping Our Heroes Foundation is a local organization founded with the vision to help those who serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard or National Guard. They also help local police, firemen and first responders. The organization’s support ensures these veterans have the resources they need during their recovery and transition back to their communities. This year’s gala and golf outing will benefit the Semper Fi Fund and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation. The golf tournament will take place Monday, Sept. 10 and will include lunch and an awards celebration afterward with cocktails and a prize drawing.
The Semper Fi Fund provides much-needed resources and lifetime support for U.S. Armed Forces veterans who have been wounded in combat, critically ill and catastrophically injured members as well as their families. The Semper Fi Fund works with service members and veterans in order to understand the needs they currently have as well as giving them support going forward. We keep our overhead low so our impact on the lives of service members and veterans is greater. The Semper Fi Fund is only one of two veteran nonprofits to receive an A+ rating from Charity Watch. You can find out more about the Semper Fi Fund by visiting their website.
The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation was founded in 1962 and is the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military children. According to their website, for the last 54 years, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation has “been providing access to affordable education for the children of Marine and Navy Corpsman attending post-high school, undergraduate and career technical education programs.” They have provided more than 37,000 scholarships worth almost $100 million. The Gala will be held at the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. This year’s Gala Honorary Speaker is Lezleigh Kleibrink. Lezleigh’s brother, Corporal Casey Owens was a United States Marine, Iraq War veteran, and Paralympic athlete. He was severely injured during the Iraq War in 2004. Corporal Owens became an advocate for the treatment of Veterans. Though he has passed away, Lezleigh continues to share her brother’s story and during this year’s gala, guests will get to hear more about Corporal Owens.
