What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you hear the word Bavaria? Do historical castles come up in your head? Or is it the quaint little towns that uphold their German ancestry in buildings and culture? Maybe you just ask yourself the question: What is Bavaria? If you have no clue what Bavaria is, you’re going to be so glad we told you!
Where is Bavaria?
Bavaria is a state located in the southeastern part of Germany that border Liechtenstein, Austria and the Czech Republic. You may know it’s capital better, Munich. Munich is where the annual Oktoberfest Beer Festival is held. Maybe you do know where Bavaria is now?
From the Towns
When you walk into Bavaria, the very first thing you will notice is the history and the culture. It is literally everywhere and it is wonderful.
Any town you walk into will look like you are stepping into a fairytale. The town of Lindau holds buildings and houses are all from an early time period. They literally look like the German towns you see in old fairy tales, but none of them look like they are old. This town was made a free Imperial City within the Holy Roman Empire back in 1275. Lindau served as a fishing settlement for more than hundreds of years. It has since been a regular tourist attraction.
The town of Regensburg was created in the medieval times and still holds onto some of those medieval characteristics. This architectural design of the town has survived many wars and was once the capital before Munich.
To The Castles
Besides the towns, you may also want to know about the castles! The castles are so unique and beautiful that Disney was inspired by one of them and used it for one of their movies!
The Neuschwanstein Castle is one of the most famous castles in all of Bavaria. Why is that? It’s because it is the real version of Sleeping Beauty’s castle in Disney world and in the movie. The castle was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria, where he used it as a retreat and as a homage to Richard Wagner. The castle can be seen today and is currently seen by over 1.3million people a year.
The Hohenschwangau Castle is a very unique looking castle. One can say it almost looks Spanish looking. It stands on top of a hill beneath the Neuschwanstein Castle. This is the childhood home of Ludwig II and was built by his father, King Maximilian II of Bavaria. This castle can also be toured around and is visited by as many as it’s counterpart.
To the Beer
We couldn’t make an article about Bavaria without mentioning a little beer! Just like how Addison has the Bitter Sisters Brewery, Bavaria has a ton of home brewed beer for you to try as well. Bavaria contains some of the top beer made out of wheat. All day long, you can have all types of beer including, light beer, dark beer, pil beers, even beer that you smoke! What?
Bavaria is like a fairytale
As we said earlier, Bavaria is unique and definitely feels like you are reading a story. If you like culture, history and beer in your vacation getaways, then consider going to Bavaria for your next one! Happy Travels!
