Healthy holiday eating? For a lot of us, that sentence doesn’t make sense. For the majority of us, the holidays usually mean a lot of unhealthy choices. But for those faithful few who have been able to keep up with their diets and healthy eating habits, the holidays can be a stressful time because of all the holiday parties, company dinner, and lunches. All of these are full of sweets, carbs and mostly (although delicious) unhealthy dishes. So, what can you do to combat those dishes during this season? According to the American Heart Association’s recommendation for holiday healthy eating, it’s OK to indulge in some of those sweet treats, but always remember to enjoy in moderation. You don’t have to miss out on mom’s amazing pumpkin pie; just make sure you don’t polish off half the pie by yourself. Moderation is key.
Another important thing to remember is to remain active. Whether going out for a short walk around the block or making sure you don’t miss your workouts at Orange Theory, staying active will help burn off those extra calories we always acquire during the holidays. Just a few minutes a day of walking and staying active is all that you need to keep you on the healthy path.
But Oscar, what about the office lunch meetings with clients, or company parties? While going out to eat with co-workers or attending holiday parties can be a blast, it can be challenging to eat healthy when you have so many delicious dishes to choose from. One way to ensure you don’t stray too far from your diet is to plan ahead. If you know you have several dinners or company parties coming up, try having a small healthy snack such as fruit before going out. This will help you control your hunger level so you don’t pig out during the party. If it’s a restaurant that you are going to, check out their menu online and see what healthy choices they offer.
For those outings where you are in charge, Addison has a variety of restaurants with great healthy options. Check out Ida-Claire’s menu for some incredibly delicious choices that will not destroy all the hard work you’ve put in throughout the year. The Dream Café on the Village on the Parkway is another great choice for a tasty brunch with co-workers that won’t wreak havoc on your diet. They offer a “Smart Choices” menu with lots of great choices.
All in all, it’s about making good choices and not excluding yourself from enjoying some of the delicious holiday dishes, just remember to indulge in moderation, stay active and plan ahead.
