Help Stop Diabetes in the Tour de Cure!

Participants can ride their bikes, walk or run in this event

Did you know that almost 30 million Americans, and 800,000 people in our community, have diabetes? According to the American Diabetes Association, an estimated 21 million people have been diagnosed with the disease, and roughly 8.1 million are unaware that they have it. By 2050, it’s estimated that one in three Americans will have diabetes if steps aren’t taken to stop it! This month, you can literally take steps to help. Just sign up for the American Diabetes Association’s annual Tour de Cure  event to stop diabetes. Cyclists, walkers and runners are invited to this 5k event on October 14 at 7 a.m. in Southfork Ranch in Parker.

Participants can ride their bikes, walk or run in this event that raises money for the American Diabetes Association. Red riders and striders represent those who have diabetes, but any individual or team who is a co-worker, family or friend can join to help change the future of the disease.

“Ride, run or walk – it starts with you!” said Rhonda Duchin, associate director of development for the North Texas region of American Diabetes Association, located in the Corridor. “When you register for the Tour de Cure, you become a part of the American Diabetes Association’s largest fundraising event. Joining you will be thousands of participants from around the country, who come together to directly impact the lives of people facing the daily challenges of diabetes, and their loved ones. Join us for a day of fun and celebration as we recognize our red riders and striders who are affected by diabetes every day.”

The day will start with a continental breakfast before the first race start time at 7 a.m. Once you cross the finish line, you can enjoy music by the Taylor Pace Orchestra, eat fajita bowls (sponsored by the Texas Beef Council), and visit the Health and Wellness Vendor Pavilion. Other activities at the festival include glucose testing by Sam’s Club pharmacy, massages on a first-come, first-serve basis by Massage Envy, and the Flight Activity Zone that includes bungee jumping, rock climbing, an obstacle course, a bounce house, face painting and more.

Register for the event online by October 13 for $30, and in person on the day of the event for $35. All participants must meet the fundraising minimum of $200 in addition to registration fee. The registration fee includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and hydration at rest stops, SAG, medical support, bicycle mechanics and more.

The American Diabetes Association is the nation’s leading nonprofit charity providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. The Tour de Cure is the premier cycling fundraising event of the American Diabetes Association, and the largest diabetes cycling event in the country. It is a unique opportunity for businesses, clubs, friends and families to come together to form teams with a goal of a life free of diabetes.
