Bat Boy at Outcry Theatre

Andy Stratton as Bat Boy

Looking for a frighteningly good time this October? Skip the scary movies for something a little funnier this month, and see Bat Boy: The Musical at Outcry Theatre! This whimsical, silly, and a little creepy show is playing from now until October 15 at the Studio Theatre in the Addison Theatre Centre.

The premise of the musical is anything but predictable. The Parker family finds a half boy, half bat inside a cave in West Virginia (just a normal family outing, right?) and doesn’t know what to do about it. The mother, Meredith Parker, wants to raise this him like a son, but veterinarian Dr. Parker thinks it might be best to just put the creature down. When they take him home, mayhem ensues featuring frightened neighbors and a love story blossoming between Bat Boy and the Parkers’ daughter, Shelley. Billed as “hysterical and heartbreaking” this musical will have you laughing, crying and relating to a Bat Boy as he struggles with feeling like an outcast and learning what it means to be human.

The Bat Boy story and book was written by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming. Music and lyrics of the musical was written by Laurence O’Keefe, and the show is licensed under agreement with Weekly World News.

Starring as Bat Boy is Andy Stratton, a frequent Outcry Youth Theatre Actor. Other cast members include Caitlin Kresta as Shelley, Jenna Claire as Meredith, Jason Johnson-Spinos as Dr. Parker, Quinn Angel as Sheriff Reynolds, Logan Beutel as Rick Taylor/Lorraine/Mr. Dillon, Bryce Lederer as Ron Taylor/Pan, Courtney Mentzel as Ruthie Taylor/Maggie, Ellen Eberhardt as Mrs. Taylor/Roy/Clem, Ian Lawson as Bud/Daisy/Doctor, and Gustavo Perez Diaz as Rev. Billy Hightower/Ned/Institute Man.

Tickets are available online (plus a service charge) and at the door for $20 for general admission and $30 for premium reserved seating. Performances are on October 13 at 7:30p.m., October 14 at 2p.m. and 7:30p.m., and October 15 at 2 p.m.

After a few hours with him, Bat Boy is guaranteed to be your new favorite superhero – or at least, you may empathize with bats a little more. Go a little batty this weekend and see the show, it’s the perfect way to kickoff Halloween season!
