Sweat glistened along her face and back as the burning July sun beat down on her – but that didn’t stop my dog, Bella, from running around our backyard to fetch the tennis ball. With her tongue wagging and tail flapping, she was the picture of happiness (even as I was already miserable and wanting to go back inside). Now that we are officially experiencing the hottest days of the year, it’s time to kick back and take a lesson from our dogs on how to beat the heat. Many dogs living in the North Dallas Corridor (and their owners) have come up with some creative cooling down techniques. They submitted photo proof of their cute canine friends to Addison Magazine’s fourth annual Dog Days of Summer photo contest! From now until July 14, you can go online and vote for your favorites.
Our Dog Days of Summer contest is a fun way to show off your furry friends, which is why we always have such a great time looking over the entries every year! If you are the type of person that could spend hours watching funny animals videos online, then you will love looking at the creative photos your neighbors have submitted of their dogs. The contest winner will receive a prize from the contest sponsors and a mention in the August/September issue of Addison – The Magazine of the North Dallas Corridor!
The first place winner of the 2016 Dog Days of Summer contest was Arliss, a cute white-haired dog with sunglasses, sitting at a table with a delicious summer cocktail. First runner up was Penny the Chihuahua, wearing sunglasses in her owner’s arm. The second runner up was Fitzroy, a fun-looking dog on a beach chair with a lifeguarding raft, sunglasses and a T-shirt.
One of the sponsors for the 2017 Dog Days of Summer contest is Citydog! Club. Citydog! Club inside Village on the Parkway is a grooming, playing and boarding club designed with dogs in mind. The indoor play park is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. and is a place where dogs can run around with other dogs, jump on trampolines, tug and fetch toys, and just have a good time. Dogs will also get an organic treat, and have time for naps while calming music is played. If you have to go out of town, Citydog! Club can keep your dogs for the night. Your pet will sleep comfortably on a Kuranda bed, while listening to music. The overnight employee makes sure all dogs are safe, and the live Citydog! Webcam will give you peace of mind whenever you want to check in on how Princess is doing. Finally, give your dog the spa treatment with a stop at the Citydog! Style Bar before you go. The groomers will start each pup with a HydroSurge bath and moisturizing rinse, then give them a heat-free hand blow out and brush, a nail trim and grind, gentle ear cleaning and deodorizing, ear hair removal, gland express, spritz, Citydog! Club bandana and a complimentary organic treat. Your dog will leave feeling appreciated, refreshed and ready to take on the world!
The other contest sponsor is Poochville USA, located at 15070 East Beltwood Parkway in Addison. This brand new dog boarding, grooming and daycare offers a boutique environment with modern facilities that can board up to 40 dogs at a time. Walking in the front door of Poochville, you will be greeted by chandeliers, artwork, and a beautifully decorated area where your dog will feel comfortable and relaxed. Your dogs will love playing in the large, outdoor play yard at Poochville when you book them for doggy day care. Or if you are going on vacation, sign them up for boarding. You will get a choice of exclusive private suites, including the Princess Chateau Suite that is a 3 x 8 private area with deluxe bedding, radio, turn down service and nightly gourmet treat; or the Majestic Mansion, which is a 9 x 12 room with deluxe bedding, TV turned to a favorite channel (including dog TV), turn down service and a nightly gourmet treat. Other rooms are available as well for you to choose from, depending on your dog’s needs and preferences. In addition, you can have your dog groomed during their stay, where everything from deluxe baths, shampoos, expert grooming and dog hygiene are offered.
The owner of Poochville USA, Tina Austin, also started a pooch rescue center called Cody’s Friends Rescue in 2011. This 501(c)3 nonprofit organization rescues all breeds of dogs. It now has more than 200 dogs in its care! Austin started this rescue center because 3.9 million dogs a year enter animal shelters nationwide, and 1.2 million are euthanized due to lack of space. This organization works to help homeless, unwanted, neglected and abused dogs find loving, forever homes. They also work to raise awareness about spaying and neutering, and to educate the community about shelters. Cody’s Friends Rescue has saved more than 3,000 dogs since opening, and they are continuing to save lives, one dog at a time. Donate or volunteer to help out online.
