Alice in Wonderland

A Red Queen, a White Rabbit, a Mad Hatter, and a little girl in a blue dress – what more do you need for a fantastic show? Outcry Youth Theatre is taking you to the mysterious world of Wonderland in their newest production, Alice in Wonderland, running from March 10 through March 19.

Alice in Wonderland tells the story of Alice’s crazy adventures through Wonderland, a world where you never know who will appear or disappear, what size you may grow to, or what danger lurks ahead.

“This adaption is really well done and the cast is strong,” said Kelly McDonald, Outcry Youth Theatre Marketing Volunteer. “As a lover of Carroll’s books, I appreciate the adherence to tradition in the dialogue, but I also like the twists in the script that give Alice purpose and opportunity to demonstrate her strength.”

Even though it’s still in its inaugural year, Outcry Youth Theatre has already been recognized with the 2016 Broadway World Dallas Best Youth Play Award for its production of A Wrinkle in Time. Its next production of great theatre from some of the most talented young actors in the area, is an inventive new adaption of Lewis Carroll’s classic stories, directed by Artistic Director Becca Johnson-Spinos.

Becca Johnson-Spinos wrote this adaption with her husband, Jason Johnson-Spinos, Marketing Director of Outcry Theatre. In the script, they incorporated elements of both Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Though the Looking Glass, while blending dialogue from the books with new moments that expand and deepen the familiar characters.

“Our trip to Wonderland is every bit as fun as other versions of the story, but we have given Alice a more specific narrative goal and drive,” said Becca Johnson-Spinos in a recent press release. “She’s not just wandering Wonderland as a passive observer – she must face some difficult and scary obstacles, including the infamous Jabberwocky. It’s been fun to explore these memorable characters with the kids, and to see them bring the unusual inhabitants of Wonderland to life.”

Becca Johnson-Spinos has a long career in theatre and has been involved in many productions throughout the U.S. Locally, she has served as a director at Plano Children’s Theatre, where she directed more than 25 productions, and served as their daytime show manager. She and her husband, Jason, founded Outcry Theatre in 2012 with the mission to draw young adults to theatre. Outcry Youth Theatre is a new expansion, where her extensive children’s theatre experience blends with the artistic vision of Outcry to create a unique theatre made up of young participants.

The goal of Outcry Youth Theatre is for every show to be as good as any adult production. Its first show, Love/Sick, premiered in July 2016. Since then, productions of Eurydice, A Wrinkle in Time, A Year with Frog and Toad, and Peter and the Starcatcher have been performed at Outcry Youth Theatre. Upcoming productions include Radium Girls, Seussical and Lord of the Flies.

Tickets to Alice in Wonderland are available now online for $10 for general admission and $20 for premium reserved. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. in the Addison Theatre Center.
